The Center for Disease Control (CDC) Recommendations of the Advisory
Committee on Immunization Practices 2008 report states:
- Studies of adults under age 65 show that flu vaccination can reduce both direct medical costs and indirect costs due to absenteeism.

- Influenza illness typically lasts 3-7 days, although symptoms can persist for over 2 weeks. In some cases, it can exacerbate underlying medical conditions such as cardiac disease, lead to secondary bacterial pneumonia, or contribute to other infections.
- Adults can spread the influenza virus from the day before symptoms begin through 5-10 days after illness onset.
